P-U-N-C-H is Christian Benvenuti’s highly anticipated 2014 opera. Christian started writing the first drafts of the project in 2011 while in Lepoura, a small village in the Greek island of Euboea. For nearly three years, the composer has compiled images, sounds and documents related to the Holocaust and the alliance between the american corporation IBM and the Nazi regime. This material, as well as the initial motivation for this project, was partly derived from Edwin Black’s vastly documented investigation published in his book “IBM and the Holocaust” (Dialog Press). But the composer’s search went beyond the book. Christian often came across texts, poems and songs written amidst unimaginable adversity in concentration camps and ghettos. Instead of attempting to represent the horror of the Holocaust, the composer chose to give voice to the parties involved by using those texts and songs as the base for several of the scenes. There are also references to Dehomag (Deutsche Hollerith-Maschinen Gesellschaft mbH, the German branch of IBM) advertising posters, anonymous European folk songs, speeches by key figures and heads of state, IBM corporate culture, and elements of Jewish traditions.

P-U-N-C-H is directed, conducted and composed by Christian Benvenuti with stage direction by Alexandre Vargas and choreography direction by Silvia Wolff.
