Research

Christian Benvenuti is a fellow at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) with a CAPES grant and the director of the Nucleus of Information Theory, Music, and Expectation Studies – NE_TIME (Núcleo de Estudos em Teoria da Informação, Música e Expectativa). He is also an European Commission Independent Expert in the fields of Music Composition, Music History, and Musicology, and an ad-hoc journal and symposia reviewer. A selection of his publications can be found in his Academia.edu or ResearchGate pages.

RESEARCH INTERESTS

His research broadly concerns the relationship between music information and the corresponding emotional message. He is currently preparing a project on issues such as the intricate dynamics between extremes of complexity and redundancy/repetition and the aesthetic features of information involved in music production and reception. In composition, Christian is interested in generative processes and methods that trigger a creative response from the composer, forming a duality of determinacy and intuition. His interests also include:

  • Acoustic and electroacoustic music composition
  • Algorithmic music
  • Music and emotion
  • Music and mathematics
  • Contemporary opera
  • Information dynamics of music
  • 20th and 21st century music analysis
  • Music and dance
  • Music, identity and politics
  • Information ethics and aesthetics

TEACHING

  • Composition (acoustic/electroacoustic)
  • Instrumentation and Orchestration
  • Analysis
  • Music Technology
  • Postgraduate supervision

At the Federal University of Paraná, he has also taught and developed the curriculum of Music and Information, an interdisciplinary unit intended for postgraduate students as a research tutorial on the subject.
